The first thing that comes to my mind when you say Christmas is “snow”.

And snow-covered houses!

I truly miss the NorthEast at Christmas time. Just the fact of having snow on the ground made everything seem a lot more festive…

But just to be clear – that is the only reason I miss the snow. I definitely do not miss having to dig and clean my car out of it!

Coming back to snow-covered houses… I love tiny Christmas village displays!

Therefore, I decided to build my own DIY Christmas Village display using scrap wood.

I love how it turned out. It is simple, yet colorful without being over the top!Full display of DIY Christmas Village using scrap wood on mantle

Plus the price to make it was ZERO!

How to Build a Christmas Village Using Scrap Wood

Step 1 – Design and Cut Out Houses and Trees

Identify pieces of scrap wood that you can use to make houses and trees. Once determined, roughly sketch the cut lines.

Use a miter saw at 45° angle to cut the houses and a BladeRunner X2 to cut the trees.Cutting DIY Christmas village houses out of scrap wood on the miter saw

I ended up with 3 houses and 5 trees.DIY Christmas Village cut outs on the floor

Step 2 – Make the Roof.

I found that paint sticks were the perfect width and thickness to work as roofs. Cut them to the sizes you need for the houses. Remember to leave some overhang.

I also cut out  a whole lot of triangles in random sizes from the paint sticks using a Precision saw.paintsticks to cut up for roofs of DIY Christmas village

Step 3 – Paint

Paint houses and trees in color of choice. I decided to give everything a coat of snow and painted the trees accordingly.

Step 4 – Attach the Roof

Attach the paint stick roofs to the houses. I used a pin nailer for this. But a good quality hot glue like this one should work as well. Attaching roof of houses in DIY Christmas village made from Scrap wood using pin nailer

Step 5 – Add the Icicles

Last, add icicles to the roofs using hot glue. Make sure all the triangle icicles are touching each other. (It does make a fun challenge!)Attaching snow to DIY Christmas village using hot glue.

Thats it!
