Kids Playroom Ideas: Fun Reading Nook Reveal
Finding DIY Kids playroom ideas on a budget can be tricky! Playrooms need to be fun! This playroom reading nook is full of color and fun!
This makeover has been a long time coming. Finally, the playroom has a personality of its own which is fun and vibrant. It continues to be a struggle to get the kids to keep that room organized but hopefully, having cute colorful walls will make it look not as bad 🙂 I can hope right?!
This is an awkward shaped room which is large enough for one twin bed plus dresser and nightstand. We decided for the kids to share a room until they are a bit older and made this room into their dream playroom… or at least we hope it’s their dream playroom…
Here is a look at the before of this corner –

Colorful Playroom Wall Decor Idea
My kids love color (and Mommy is so happy about that!). They wanted me to create something fun and colorful like the colorful striped dresser and bedside table.
When I saw the easy stripes from Walls Need Love, I quickly ordered all the favorite colors because I knew I was going to be needing them!
It took a while for me to come up with a feasible plan. There were a lot of ideas that got tried and scratched – one of them being random stripes. Well, that wasn’t happening because… hello! We have got to break out of the monotony!
Finally, I decided to cut the easy stripes into short pieces –Rounded off the edges –“Sprinkle” them on the wall randomly! It was a quick and fun project and my 6-year-old helped out too since there really was no pattern to follow
Kids Reading Nook Idea –
For the books, I installed rain gutter bookshelves to create a little library with the books facing forward. These shelves were super economical and easy to install. See full details on how to install them and why they are really awesome for little kids.
Playroom Decorating Ideas –
Paper Mache Letters – I spelled out fun and inspiring words in paper mache letters and covered them with colorful scrapbook paper using mod podge. Apart from the “IMAGINE”, I also have the words “PLAY” and “LAUGH” on the opposite walls. these letters are held to the wall with 3M command strips.
If you ask me why the letters are not in a straight line – I had two motives for that – one – it’s fun and playful to have them staggered and, two, I don’t need to bother making sure they are aligned and on a line 🙂
“Dream Big” foil wood sign – I created this quick project with some scrap wood and rainbow deco foil. That thing is so amazing and fun. Of course, my daughter loves everything shiny and rainbow. Full tutorial on this easy kids room decor idea is right here!
Playroom decor ideas – Little accessories can totally bring a room together like this skull scoop pillow. It is the perfect color and works nicely to bring together the theme, wall, chair, and the little rug. Of course, it is super cute too! The pillow is from Walls Need Love too! They have an amazing selection of throw pillows!
Playroom Toy Organization –
On the wall opposite the bookshelves, the DIY Toy organizer tries its best do its job.
It finally feels like the playroom is done. It is a fun and colorful space for the kids to play, read and have fun (also make a mess 🙂 ).
I leave you with a before and after –

I love this! Just curious, what size (width) easy stripes did you use for the sprinkles? Thanks!
I’m totally smitten with this design! I’m going to borrow the sprinkle idea from you 🙂 and wasn’t wondering what width of easy stripes you used and also what color was the blue you used? Their teal? Sky blue? Thanks so much for sharing this adorable room!
Was** ugh! Too excited to spell correctly HA!
Hi Lauren, I am so glad you loved it! It is going to be so much fun! I used the 1″ easy stripe. Unfortunately, my order confirmation doesn’t have the exact colors on it. I will check leftover roll tomorrow and see if I can figure out the color. Will let you know!
Oh that would be great! Thank you!
Hi Lauren, the roll doesn’t say anything either but I think it may have been light blue. I am sorry I haven’t been of much help.
